Thank you for considering therapy. Let me explain to you some aspects of my approach to the therapy process and thereby address and ease your concerns.
When you call me for an appointment, we will set up a time to carefully review the issues in need of consultation. Together, parent(s) and therapist we will assess these issues and discuss treatment objectives and goals. The ways in which we achieve those goals is called a treatment plan; frequent parent meetings will keep you updated on your child’s progress toward achieving the treatment goals. Other available resources for your child may be identified, and we will discuss when it is time to bring therapy to a close and how best to achieve a smooth transition for you and your child.
When your child first comes into therapy, I utilize various forms of play in order to establish safety and to create an environment in which your child can explore his or her experiences. Arts, crafts, music, and sandplay are examples of what is available in my office. I sometimes tell parents that the first few sessions may look like arts and crafts time – because they are! Sitting down and painting together is an age-old way to relax and allow relationships and communication to develop.
